Bathroom finishes: gold, black, silver or white

Start from the metal you can't change, the faucet and shower trim, then match it or add one accent. Our finishes compared, with tones named in words.

Four NOVSIX round toilet brush holders in brushed gold, silver, matte black and white on a beige background

The short answer: start with the metal you cannot easily change, usually the faucet and the shower trim. Either match it, or keep it and add one accent finish across the room. Then buy the small pieces, like the toilet brush holder, the squeegee and the hooks, in that finish.

Look at what is already there

Stand in the bathroom in daylight and list the metal you see: faucet, shower head, drain, towel bar, mirror frame, door handle. One finish usually dominates. That is your base.

  • Chrome or bright steel base: silver pieces disappear into it; black or white make a calm contrast.
  • Matte black base: black pieces match it; brushed gold is the classic accent. For a closer look at our matte black round holder, there is a creator's video review of this holder on Amazon.
  • Gold or warm metal base: match it with gold pieces, but keep the tones close (see below).
  • White ceramics and no strong metal: white pieces blend in; one finish of metal adds a focal point.

Know what each finish looks like

Finish names differ between brands and even between product lines, so read the tone, not only the name. These are our finishes as named on our product pages.

Finish How it looks Where we make it
Gold warm; brushed gold, satin gold, matte gold or rich gold, depending on the line toilet brush holders, sets, squeegees, shower hooks
Silver brushed stainless steel, brushed silver or polished chrome holders, sets, squeegees, hooks, faucet aerators
Black matte black holders, sets, squeegees, hooks, a silicone brush
White white-coated steel, or white plastic on the silicone and plunger sets round holder, set, silicone brush, brush and plunger set
Graphite, bronze dark graphite gray; warm bronze the round holder

Shades can vary between product lines and on different screens, so if two gold pieces must sit side by side, choose them from the same line.

Match or accent

Match when the room is small or already busy: one metal throughout reads calm. A silver holder next to a chrome faucet is the simplest choice; our guide on how to choose brushed silver accessories explains how brushed steel differs from chrome.

Accent when the room is plain: keep the base metal and add one other finish in two or three places that you see together, for example a brushed gold holder by the toilet and gold hooks in the shower. Two finishes in a room is plenty; a third usually looks accidental.

Gold beside black is a pairing we like: a brushed gold holder, a matte black squeegee and black suction hooks on the glass.

Finishes by bathroom style

  • Dark walls, painted panels or dark stone: brushed gold stands out against them; matte black disappears into them.
  • White tile and white ceramics: white pieces blend in; brushed silver looks clean and quiet; black adds a graphic line.
  • Warm wood and beige stone: gold and bronze sit naturally next to wood tones; graphite gives a cooler contrast.
  • A small rental with chrome fixtures: silver or white keeps the room calm and goes with whatever comes next.
  • A guest bathroom or powder room: few pieces and short visits, so it is a good place to try a bolder finish you might hesitate to use in the bathroom you shower in every day.

Light changes the finish

The same piece looks different under a warm bulb and in daylight. Warm light makes gold look deeper and silver slightly warmer; cool light makes white look whiter and black look flatter. Before you choose, look at the faucet under your own bathroom light, not only in the shop photos.

Finishes in the shower

The shower is where small pieces gather: a squeegee on the glass, hooks for a towel or a loofah. Keep them in one finish, ideally the finish of the shower head or the glass frame. Our squeegees come in gold, black and silver, each with a 10, 12 or 14 in blade, and our suction hooks in gold, black, silver and chrome. Before the hooks go on the tile, check which shower walls suction hooks hold on.

Match the sheen as well as the color

Finishes differ in how much they shine, not only in color. Polished chrome reflects like a mirror; brushed steel and brushed gold have fine lines that soften reflections; matte black and white-coated steel barely shine at all. Two pieces of the same color with a different sheen can look like a mismatch, while two colors with the same soft sheen often look planned.

  • A polished faucet: chrome hooks repeat it exactly; brushed pieces nearby read as a softer second layer.
  • A brushed or matte faucet: keep the small pieces brushed or matte too, so nothing in the room flashes.

Warm and cool metals in one room

Gold and bronze are warm; chrome, steel and graphite are cool. Mixing the two groups works when each has its own zone: cool metal at the basin and in the shower, for example, and warm gold by the toilet and on the towel hooks. A single warm piece surrounded by cool ones tends to look like a leftover. Black and white are neutral and sit between both groups, which is why they are an easy second finish.

Finishes with towels and paint

  • Gold: cream, sand, olive and navy towels; warm white or deep green walls.
  • Black: white, gray and natural linen; works with almost any wall color.
  • Silver and chrome: white, pale gray and blue.
  • White: anything; it lets the towels carry the color.
  • Graphite and bronze: charcoal, terracotta and oatmeal tones.

If you plan to change the faucet

If a new faucet or shower set is coming within a year, choose the small pieces for the room you are planning, not the one you have, or pick white or silver for now: both sit quietly next to almost any metal. Small accessories are the easiest part of a bathroom to swap, so they are a low-risk way to try a finish before you commit to it on the fixtures.

Think about everyday care

Every finish we make is cleaned the same way: a soft, damp cloth, then dry it (no abrasive cleaners; the full routine is in How to clean a toilet brush and holder). Water spots show more on dark and polished finishes, so a quick dry after cleaning keeps black and chrome looking even. See Care for details.

One finish across the room

If you want everything in one finish, these are the pieces we make in each:

  • Gold: round, square, squircle, partially rounded and wall-mounted holders; sets of 2 and 3; squeegees in 10, 12 and 14 in; suction hooks.
  • Silver and chrome: round, square, squircle, partially rounded and wall-mounted holders; a set of 2; squeegees; hooks in silver and chrome; faucet aerators in chrome.
  • Black: round, squircle and partially rounded holders; a set of 2; squeegees; hooks; a silicone brush set in black.
  • White: the round holder and a set of 2 in white-coated steel; a silicone brush set; the brush and plunger set.

Shower squeegees and suction hooks come in gold, black and silver tones too: see shower squeegees and shower hooks.

Is brushed gold the same as brass?

Not necessarily. Brass is a metal; brushed gold describes a color and a texture. Our round gold holder, for example, is listed as 304 stainless steel in brushed gold.
